  Never been self-catering in the city before?
  If you’ve never stayed in a holiday apartment before, you might be wondering exactly what to expect.
  
  1. Air conditioning and heating aren’t fitted as standard in Barcelona, so if keeping cool or staying warm are top of your hit list, make sure you book an apartment that comes equipped.
  
  2. Not every apartment in Barcelona accepts guests with pets. If you’re thinking of bringing yours along with you on holiday, check that you’ve filtered your search results to suit.
  
  3. There’s a maximum amount of guests per apartment, however there might be fewer beds than guests, as some flats include a sofa bed. If each of the people in your party is keen to have their own bedroom, you can search specifically per number of rooms by using the filter.
  
  4. Most buildings in Barcelona don’t have private parking, and this is especially the case for places in the city centre. If you’re coming by car, apply the filter ‘with parking facilities’ at the right-hand side of the page.
  
  The city’s districts
  
  Most of the buildings in the central districts of Barcelona (for example, the Gothic quarter, Born, the Raval, Poble Sec, Sant Antoni and Barceloneta) are traditional and date back quite some time, meaning that apartments here tend to be more compact than in other areas. Many may not have a lift, either. On the other hand, having a host of historic landmarks on your doorstep probably more than makes up for it!
  
  In general, holiday apartments located close to the Passeig de Gràcia in l’Eixample and the Sagrada Famìlia neighbourhood are larger and more modern. And although most buildings include a lift, it’s not a given – make sure you double check beforehand.
  
  The district of Gràcia is a tricky one to summarise. The southern part of it, closest to Diagonal Avenue, is similar to the city centre, with apartments that tend to be on the smaller side. But as you head up closer to the Parc Güell area you’ll find more modern builds, some of which even have terraces offering great views over the city.
  
  Otherwise, the rest of the areas of the city are fairly tranquil, and mainly residential, so are good places to choose if you would rather mix with locals than other tourists. Book a holiday apartment here and you’re bound to find something offering good value for money. Close
