Location
The Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) is located at the heart of the city. It is often the first stop on the Barcelona adventure, once you have discovered the unique atmosphere of Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s emblematic strip which is lined with 1.3km of street performers and stalls filled with flowers, birds and animals.
The Gothic Quarter is a medieval town built on roman foundations, that is made up of a diverse mix of small squares and narrow streets. The area boasts a plethora of boutiques, bars and restaurants that blend in with the area’s ancient sights and make Barrí Gòtic the perfect place to enjoy Barcelona’s culture. In particular, the Fiesta Mayor, La Mercé, which take place at the end of September and fill the streets with art, music and culture.
The Gothic quarter stretches from Plaça Catalunya, in between la Rambla and Vía Laietana, down to the old port. To get there take the metro to Catalunya (L3/L1), Liceu (L3), Drassanes (L3) or Jaume I (L4). The Portal del Angel, Barcelona’s main commercial street along with the neighbouring Passeig de Gracia, stretches from Plaza Catalunya to the square just outside the Cathedral and the roman walls which previously surrounded the city.
The majority of the city’s main attractions are easily accessible from this area, such as the Roman artefacts on display at the city’s History Museum at the quiet Plaça del Rei (King’s Square). Heading south, you’ll find the Plaça Reial (Royal Square) one of the most characteristic squares in the city. The numerous bars and restaurants have terraces shaded by the surrounding palm trees, perfect for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. To the east, the Plaça Santa Jaume is built on the old roman court and still retains its role as the political centre of the city. You’ll also find here the town hall and the Palau de la Generalitat, the office of the Catalan government, sitting inside a magnificent gothic-style building which dates back to the Renaissance.
Other sights in the area that are worth a visit include the Salvador Dalí museum on the corner next to the Cathedral and also the Erotic Museum on Las Ramblas, well known as a hot spot for Stag Do’s and Hen Nights in Barcelona. The Gothic quarter due its location in the centre of Barcelona, makes it easy to discover the city’s heritage and sights without forgetting about the famous beaches.
