The word `Borne´ originally meant `tournament´ or `competition ´ and in the Middle Ages this was where Barcelona’s festivals, processions, tournaments, carnivals and the burning of heretics by the Inquisition took place. Nowadays the Born district is one of the most “happening spots” in Barcelona. The streets are lined with fantastic bars, cosy restaurants and straight from the catwalk fashion shops. Being one of the ´trendiest´ areas of Barcelona to live in, it seems to keep expanding in variety and choice but yet it somehow manages to maintain its fabulous charm. Back in the 1980´s the Born played an important role in the alternative art culture of the city. For this reason you will find a wide range of handmade textile and craft articles. Inspired by the Picasso museum located in the district there are many smaller galleries and workshops on the little side streets. These are nearly always opened to visitors to come in and have a look around, buy some of their articles or merely enjoy the atmosphere in this delightfully area. Places of interest to look out for; The Santa María del Mar Church, one of the most important Gothic structures in the city. Also of interest is the Picasso Museum and the Born market (which is currently under reconstruction). |
