The Olympic Village (Villa Olimipic) flanks the Mediterranean Sea and Barcelona´s Port. This area was reconstructed by the French architect Prosper Verboom for the Olympic Games in 1992. All of the streets here cross in a rectangular style, which is a very unusual design in European town planning. The whole district was built in a rather modern, functional style. There are people who say that they can still feel the Olympic Spirit in the air when they visit this part of Barcelona. This is where people from all over Catalunya come on Sundays to stroll along the promenade with their children, enjoy the sunshine and afterwards eat excellent seafood in one of the 82 restuarants that surround the promenade area. Later on the discos, nightclubs and bars open their doors for those who are looking for a little bit more ….. The area is well communicated, within five minutes by bus or metro you can reach the city center and/or the Gothic Quarter where you can visit the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, the Santa Maria del Mar Church and the famous Ramblas. If you would like to see the famous Sagrada Familia – Gaudi´s unfinished masterpiece, there is a direct bus route (number 10) which will bring you there in eight minutes that leaves from the area. The Olympic Village has many advantages as a place to stay in Barcelona. It’s a quiet, relaxing area, it has the beach and promenade at hand and the option of numerous bars and discos for those who want nightlife as only Barcelona can offer. |
