The origin of the Sants district started out in a small rural town with a parish church dedicated to Sant Bartholomew just next to Barcelona. Wine, vegetables and meat were the main products cultivated in this area and were sold in the markets of Barcelona. With the construction of a new road at the end of the 18th Century and the expansion of Barcelona´s borders the Sants district was annexed by Barcelona in 1897. More than anything Sants is a safe residential area and with its parks it offers the tourist a pleasant stay in Barcelona. The main street, Carrer de Sants , is full of clothes shops, greengrocers, butchers etc with all you need for everyday living. You will also find the market on this street and in its neighbourhood there are busy little cafes and restaurants. Here locals stop for their morning coffees. In Sants you can join in the typical daily routine of the Barcelona locals without seeing tourists on every street corner as you may do in other parts of the city. Its well communicated by metro and bus and within fifteen minutes you can get to Plaza Catalunya in Barcelona city center, Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gracia (Gaudi buildings) and the Port area. It also is the area that has the best connections to the airport, by car, bus or train. Places of interest to visit: Plaza España with its fountain display, or the area at the, Montjüic hill which once hold the World Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929 and the Olympic Games which were held in Barcelona in 1992, the Parc de l´Espanya Industrial and of course Carrer de Sants. |
