Location
The Gothic Quarter is one of the oldest and most interesting districts of Barcelona from the tourists’ point of view. It is here you´ll find ‘La Rambla’, the two kilometer avenue which stretches from Plaza Catalunya to Barcelonas Port and is generally considered the essence of Barcelona. Included on the list of ‘Must See’ is the Boqueria Market – an open air fresh food market, the Gothic Church – barroca de Betlem, the Palacio de Moya, the Academia de las Ciencias and the Casa Bruno Cuadros. The area used to be known as the neighbourhood of the Cathedral but nowadays its better known as the Gothic Quarter. It is the center of Barcelonas´ history and as such is also the oldest urbanized part of the city. Throughout the centuries and up to today it has had the role of being Barcelonas´ political and institutional center point. Here you will find the magnificent Gothic structures built during Barcelonas zenith and which give evidence of the important cultural role it played during the Middle Ages. The city council has also preserved the old Roman fortifications and palaces such as the temple dedicated to Augusto and some of the Roman Walls still remain in tact.
The Gothic Quarter is visited by thousands of tourists each year and its one of the areas most sought after to live in. It´s easy to loose yourself in the quaint windy streets and the variety of tapa bars and restaurants will always make a coffee break worthwhile. On Carrer de Ferran and Carrer Jaume 1, as well as in most of the streets in the upper half of the Gothic you will find all kinds of shops, from the well known high-street clothes stores to little stationary shops. In the lower half of the Gothic Quarter towards the Port area, you will find the streets get narrower and a little gloomy but they too have their attractions and are worth a visit even just to try some of the local pastries and cakes in the one of the many café´s. Some of the attractions in the area are Plaza del Rei, La Plaza Reial and of course not forgetting the famous Gothic Cathedral.
