Borne and the neighbouring area of Sant Pere collectively form La Ribera (The Waterfront), one of the most popular places to live in Barcelona, right in the medieval heart of the city. The area has been the commercial centre of Barcelona for hundreds of years and these days with more and more money being spent on turning the old market into fashionable bars and restaurants, the area is immaculately turned out. Since the 1980s, Borne has been a focal point of the city's alternative art scene and the district blends together both medieval and modern influences. One of its finest monuments is an extraordinary work of Modernisme the Palau de la Musica Catalana. The palace has often been described as being possibly the wildest, most extreme expression of Moderisme ever built. The gothic, catalan building, the basilica Santa María del Mar, is one of the most contrasty works in Born, with its characteristic horizontal lines, big plains and quadratic arches and octagonal towers. It is not surprising that this basilica is very popular for weddings. Furthermore, the indescribable acustic turn the basilica into a great concert hall. There is no doubt that Pablo Picasso is one of the best and esteemed spanish artists. Although he was born in Andalusia, Picasso is the adoptive child of Barcelona, where 3.500 of his works were exhibited. The Picasso museum is located in the street called Montcada. The building exists of five connected palaces, which are once belonged to the rich merchants. Today it keeps the treasure of the artist. Next to the Picasso museum you find the textile museum and the Barbier-Mueller art museum which exhibits precolumbian art. After the excursion through the museums, the Ciutadella park provides a perfect place to relax. Besides the zoo you can find a science museum (Museu de Ciències Naturals), a lake with boot rental and more than 30 interesting statues. One of the most interesting statue has three deers, dedicated to Walt Disney. All these places are at close quarters but also well connected by public transport (metro L4 station Jaume I or Barceloneta). Therefore Born is definitely one of the best places to start your discovery of the city, as well as to live here.
