| Situated between the Mediterranean and a coastal mountain range, the town of Sitges boasts both beautiful beaches and spectacular mountains. The Costa de Garraf, to the south of Barcelona, has in Sitges one of its key locations. The beaches, some of which are blue-flag beaches, with their crystelline water, and the proximity to the mountains have attracted people from all parts of the world for many years. The town centre and its port whose name Port d´Aigua Dolç literally means « port of sweet water » are also very worth a visit. Long, narrow, typically Spanish streets lined with little white houses open into pretty squares where visitors can dine outdoors in the warmth of the sun. The name of Sitges is known around the world because of its long-running popularity in the gay community. In the summertime, Sitges is the place to be for many gay tourists from all corners of the world, something that certainly gives the town a truly unique festive touch. For those who decide to visit Sitges, the Casa de la Vila and the museum of the Palau Maricel are two places that are not to be missed. Also very worth a look is the home and workshop of the writer and painter Santiago Rusiñol, the Cau Ferrat. This artist arrived in Sitges in 1891, sparking a movement that made Sitges the focus of the artistic and intelectual community in the years to come. Cultural events are high on the agenda in Sitges with yearly fixtures like the international vintage rally, the international film festival of Cataluña and the Easter celebrations attracting people of all types and ages. Throughout the city, as well as at the ports and beaches, are to be found many restaurants specialising in the local cuisine. One of the most typical plates of the area and a real treat is “xató”, made of salad, cod, tuna, anchovies and olives, and topped with “salsa romesco”. And nobody should return home from Sitges without trying the squid ink with potato and ali-oli, tuna STEW or “fidea” a typical pasta. And, for those who come to Spain to experience the famous nightlife, they will not be let down in Sitges! The “fiesta” in Sitges is spectacular and attracts people from all over the world. Young people come to dance to the latest beats or to chat away the night in one of the many local bars. To experience the height of the party town, a tour of the “Calle del Pecado” is without question a must-do. To travel from Sitges to Barcelona, it is possible to go by car or by train: the train station is right in the centre of the town. |
