Differences among apartments in Barcelona main districts
What are the apartments in Ciutat Vella like?
Encompassing el Barrí Gòtic, el Raval, Barceloneta and modern day el Born, Ciutat Vella is the old town of Barcelona. Dating back to medieval times, this is the oldest part of the city, connected by a labyrinth of little backstreets. Unlike more modern parts of Barcelona, buildings in this area were not strategically planned. This is immediately obvious while walking through the achingly beautiful maze of hidden streets. Here buildings seem to lean so close you can almost imagine stretching from the balcony on one side of the street and touching the apartment opposite. What was once the poorer part of the city, this is now among the most desirable locations in the Catalan capital, with an authentic charm that will take your breath away.
What are the apartments in lEixample like?
By the turn of the 19th Century, Barcelona had become overcrowded and needed to extend its walls beyond Plaça Catalunya. This mass building project became known as LEixample (literally the Extension). The area was planned on a strict grid system, with wide roads and a series of regular octagonal blocks each containing a large inner courtyard. This design allows for all four faces of each block to receive sunlight during the day. As a result of such planning, most apartments in this area are naturally light and airy with windows that overlook both the street and the communal central courtyard.
What are the apartments in Grácia like?
Gràcia used to be a village in its own right before LEixample was created to connect the district to the rest of Barcelona, yet the area still maintains a strong, community feel. The district is slightly older than the surrounding area so apartments here typically have a more rustic feel. Unlike LEixample, apartment blocks are not so uniform in their dimensions, so instead of inner courtyards, Gràcia is dotted with central, pedestrianized Plazas where the locals come to eat and catch up with neighbours and friends.
