Nestled at the bottom of Montjuïc is the unspoilt residential area of Poble Sec. Its name in Catalan means ‘dry village’ – a reference to the fact that the neighbourhood was the last one in Barcelona to get a public fountain (which still works to this day). Poble Sec was traditionally a working-class, industrial district, but don’t let that put you off – nowadays it’s a laid-back place popular with an arty and bohemian crowd. Despite the increasingly multi-cultural make-up, the neighbourhood has managed to keep a very authentic Catalan feel and strong community spirit. If you’re lucky you might catch the locals dancing the sardana in one of its charming little plazas on a Friday night. Choosing to rent a holiday apartment in this underestimated corner of the city means you’ll be within easy walking distance of the cultural sites and green slopes of Montjuïc, and about a 15-minute walk from the Ramblas. Although there are plenty of local bars and restaurants, most of the area is residential, so it’s a lot quieter than being in the city centre. Metro stops Poble Sec and Paral-lel are close by, and you’ll also be ideally placed to reach Plaça Espanya, where you can get the bus to the airport.
