In 2006 Barcelona had the good fortune to host the Red Bull Air Race and thousands crowded the beaches to get a glimpse of the show. This year the race is back and those in Barcelona have the chance once again of watching the thrilling antics of 15 of the world’s top pilots as they compete for the title.

Commencing on the 3rd of October at 12:00 (according to the the very specific data from the organisers), for an entire weekend you will be able to marvel at the spectacular aerial manoeuvres, formation flying, parachute jumping and much more. Once again you will be able to watch the show from the beaches of Bogatell and Icaria to see if the current champ from Germany will carry away the trophy and be crowned the 2009 world champion.

For those who don’t know the rules of the Red Bull Air Race, here is a brief introduction. The pilots go out one immediately behind the other flying around a track marked by large columns, performing set manoeuvres at a speed of approximately 400 km/h. In the event that a pilot touches any of the columns or misses out on a manoeuvre, the judges will penalise him by subtracting points and/or adding time. As you can imagine, these races are not exempt from risk. In order to prevent collisions in the air, the pilots have to obey the strict rules.

In 2003 when Red Bull became the main sponsor and since then, air racing has gained in popularity. This year a record number of viewers is expected so we recommend that you arrive early in order to find a good position to watch the spectacle.
