What are the cleanest beach waters to swim around Barcelona?
The beaches of Barcelona continually draw tourists and locals alike to go down to the beach any day of the week to relax, have a drink and enjoy the golden Mediterranean sun. The undeniable electricity and atmosphere elicited by non-stop music, beach and football players and constant cries of ¨beer, cola, agua, cerveza¨ create the uniqueness of the Barcelona beaches. However, with this party atmosphere also comes litter and dirtiness within and around the beaches. As such, Barcelona beaches have developed a slight reputation for being dirty and having unclean water.
Nevertheless, 1992 saw a massive clean up operation of the beaches undertaken for the Barcelona Olympics. To this day, maintenance of Barcelona beaches still exists but frequent overcrowding around the central beaches like Barceloneta and Bogatell is the primary reason in maintaining such a reputation.
So, if you are looking for those pristine beaches with crystal clear water, I recommend hopping on a train, bus or going by car for a short trip out of town. To the north lies the renowned Costa Brava which contains pinewoods growing close to the shore with branches dipping into sea illuminating water of the richest blue to shades of amazing turquoise. Also up north just after Masnou lies Ocata containing an enormous stretch of golden sand with delightfully clean and clear water. Further about an hour up the north coast from Barcelona, you can find San Pol. Surrounded by lush green hills, San Pol contains beautifully clear water that is never over crowded and entices many to make day trips over weekends.
Alternatively along the southern coastline, you can find Costa Dorada well known for its magnificent sandy beaches. Tarragona is the primary beach which is quite significantly south of Barcelona but again possesses those waters that you would see on a ¨dream getaway¨ resort.
Having visited beaches both north and south of Barcelona, I found that the beaches down south were very sandy with warmer water. As an Australian, I love the sandiness but the beaches up north provided colder and more refreshing water to swim in.
So the choice is yours…if you are looking for the upbeat and dynamic scene, beaches within Barcelona are the way to go. But if you are in search of a more relaxed and beaches with water of higher quality, I recommend taking a day trip out of Barcelona.
