Poble Espanyol – a town within a city

Poble Espanyol a town within a city

“Excuse me, how do I get to Andalucia?”
“Easy! Just head through Mallorca, and then take the first street on the left.”
Only in Poble Espanyol could you hear this interaction. This “town within a city” is a real-size model of a typical Spanish pueblo, made up of copies of 117 well-known buildings. 15 of Spain’s regions are represented by their own areas, giving you the chance to travel the length and breadth of the country without ever leaving the grounds of Poble Espanyol. It has to be one of THE things to do in Barcelona.

Originally designed by the modernist architect Puig i Cadafalch for the 1929 International Exhibition, Poble Espanyol is now the 5th most visited place in the whole of Barcelona which is no surprise given how much there is to entertain you here:

For lovers of modern art – highlights include the Fundación Fran Daurel, a permanent collection of more than 300 works from artists such as Picasso, Dalí, Miró and Barceló; the sculpture Entorn-Contorn from Josep Guinovart and the Sculptural Gardens; a green area of 5000m2 with splendid views of Barcelona.

For shopping and craft lovers - there are 40 workshops and 22 shops in operation in Poble Espanyol dealing in ceramics, engraving, decorative painting, glass fusing, puppet-making, jewellery, masks, sculpture, leather, embroidery, basket-weaving, musical instrument-making, espadrille-making and a long list of others.

For families – the Treasure Hunt (available in English, Spanish, French and Catalan) is an excellent way for families with kids between the ages of 3 and 12 to get the most from a visit to Poble Espanyol. Decode its mysteries and find out all there is to know about this open-air museum.
On Sundays they run a family programme (in Catalan but still very visual) which includes puppets, story telling, music and magic.

For flamenco lovers – the Tablao de Carmen located in the Barrio Andaluz stages the best flamenco show in Barcelona. There are 2 performances nightly (7.30pm and 9.30pm) and you can also choose to have dinner or tapas while you enjoy the music, dance and song. Tickets include free entry to the Poble Espanyol from one hour before the start of the show.

For everyone – plenty of restaurants and bars. Also 6 different organised visits with prior booking.

Audio Guide - an audio guide is available in English, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian and German.
