What an opportunity

I woke up in the morning feeling a tingling mix of anxiety and excitement. I’d never been jet skiing before and quite frankly I had no idea what to expect. Now I’m not the most faint hearted person, but with the words of jealous friends still circling around my mind- “Try not to fall off, mate!” and “I hear they go quite fast you know”- you can understand my slightly nervy emotions.

The instructor

So on a sizzling summer’s day in Barcelona, I stepped off the metro at El Maresme-Forum and made my way to down to the port. As soon as I arrived, all the initial apprehension I was feeling was completely washed away. Henry, the instructor, warmly welcomed me and began taking me through the do’s and don’ts of the Jet Ski. His professional manner immediately put me at ease and I knew I was in a safe pair of hands- being multilingual (I heard him speak fluent English, French, Spanish and Catalan in the space of a few minutes), the briefing was very clear, very simple and over in no time at all. And after handing over all the gear- wetsuit, lifejacket and ‘dry bag’ (in case you wish to take a camera with you for the ride) – we both hopped on and were off and away!

Speeding along the water High speeds

Pre-thrill suspense

For your experience you will of course be provided with your own jet ski, and the instructor will follow you every step of the way, but for this particular time I shared mine with Henry. I couldn’t have wished for better conditions that day, the waters were the coolest and calmest you’ll ever see- I knew I was in for a thrilling ride! I could instantaneously feel the immense power of the Jet Ski as it effortlessly glided along the water. The engine of this monstrous machine purred as we slowly edged out of the port, like an outrageous beast just waiting to be unleashed out of its cage, and at this point the only thing on my mind was to get out there and hit top speed. But before I took to the wheel (well, handlebars in this case) I knew I couldn’t miss the opportunity to take a few snaps. From the sea, the views of the Barcelona skyline were absolutely magnificent- like none I’d ever seen before. As you cruise along the water, you’ll get a completely different perspective of the city, with the W Hotel, Montjuïc, Torre Agbar and Mount Tibidabo all perfectly visible in the distance.

Adrenaline pumping madness

Now it was time to give it a go for myself. As I gripped the handlebars I could feel the blood fiercely pumping through my veins, the adrenaline really began to kick in. To have control of such a powerful machine gives you a wonderful sense of freedom, almost invincibility. Ripping and roaring through the water at speeds of 50km/hr (or 35 knots) is an unbelievable feeling. As you ride the waves, with water splashing ferociously in your face, you’ll feel an incredible buzz. Now I’m no Lewis Hamilton (or the jet skiing equivalent), but the key is to be quite bullish with the sea. It takes courage, but keep your finger firmly on the accelerator at all times and the rest will come. Before I knew it though, it was time to head back to base.

For anyone looking for a high thrill, high speed and high fun-filled experience, this is the one. I highly recommend doing a jet skiing experience to anyone visiting Barcelona!
