Introduction:

Here is everything you HAVE to know before enjoying Barcelona´s eating establishments. Spanish people eat late, this is a fact. Lunchtime starts at 2PM and goes until about 3.30 to 4PM, and dinner starts at about 9.30. If you turn up any earlier than that they´ll tell you to come back at a later time, or you will be eating with the restaurant staff. At the end of your meal, there is always that annoying difference in tipping behaviour. Well, here are the rules for tipping in Barcelona: there are no rules, it´s common in mid- or upper-range restaurants to leave 1-2 € - rarely over 3 € - but many locals leave nothing or just a nominal 10 cents. Name	Cometacinc:
	Cometacinc could be described as a surprise just waiting to be discovered among the firmament of Barcelona’s restaurants. A pleasant space providing dishes like the grilled red tuna with apricot sauce, only the best ingredients, great taste and good service make having a meal here obligatory. Approximate price 25 - 35 €.

Name	Café de L’Acadèmia:
	Perhaps the best of a clutch of quality restaurants near the Catalan government and the town hall, the Acadèmia serves some 50-odd dishes that range from Catalan classics such as Rossejat (rice cooked in a fish broth) with prawns to a delicious chicken brochette or quail with sesame and soy sauce. On the floor above, there are magnificent rooms for larger group dinners, offering beautiful views of the medieval Plaça Sant Just. The average price is approximately 20 - 30 €.

Name	Plà:
	In the heart of the Gothic center, Plà continues to offer Mediterranean cuisine, but never forgets other cultures, as demonstrated by its Asian-inspired creations. The house specials change every fortnight, and are typical of a dynamic menu that also includes vegetarian options. Thursday to Saturday you’ll find special chef’s recommendations. A young team providing good service, homemade desserts, a fine wine selection and appropriate music, all in a soft-lit ambience. Booking recommended. Approximate price: 20 € - 30 €.

Name	Els Quatre Gats:
	Not so much an institution as a monument. In 1897 a figure-about-town called Pere Romeu opened this café in a Modernista building by Puig i Cadafalch, and for a few years it was the great meeting point of Bohemian Barcelona. Major artists of the day such as Rusiñol and Casas painted pictures especially for it, and the menu cover was Picasso´s first paid commission. It closed in 1903, and was used for decades as a textile warehouse, until in the 1980s it was finally restored and reopened, with reproductions by contemporary artists of the original paintings. Under it´s current management it´s much more smart than Bohemian, but is an attractive place for a coffee, with good but pricey tapas. In the room at the back, where Pere Romeu once presented avant-garde performances, there is a restaurant, with a good set lunch menu. The restaurant serves typical Catalan foods.

El Born

Name	Little Italy:
	Little Italy combines Mediterranean cuisine with Italian specialities: carpaccio, pasta and rice dishes. As suggested by the name, the restaurant is decorated in the style of New York’s Italian quarter in Soho. On Wednesday and Thursday nights live jazz music creates a cosy atmosphere. At midday they offer a variety of lunchtime specials, which include a vegetarian option. Approximate price: 20 € to 30 €.

Name	Gente de Pasta:
	Gente de Pasta is a new vibrant avant-garde pasta restaurant and bar serving nouvelle cuisine. Perfectly situated in Le Borne. DJ in session playing the coolest House, Acid Jazz and New Age tunes. The restaurant seats 120 inside and 40 on the terrace and is available for private functions.

Name	Salero
	With the celebration of their fifth anniversary still fresh in the memory, Salero welcomes the winter with some attractive new dishes. Highlights include soybeans with purple onions, wild mushrooms Pil-Pil, or the Guinea Fowl with polenta. Also serving varied breakfasts and other specialities of the house. Eixample

Name	East 47:
	East 47: the street that housed Factory, Andy Warhol’s New York studio, at Nr. 231, and the name of Barcelona’s Hotel Claris restaurant, which features some original works from the artist himself. The kitchen serves up treats like Potato Soup with Black Truffles or desserts such as Whiskey Sour (Hot-Cold). Afterwards you can start the night off in style by sipping on a cocktail at the ground floor bar while listening to music from the double CD “East 47 Sounds”. The average price for a dinner is 48 € per person.

Name	Mandalay
	Uniquely decorated with the kind of features that exude life-giving energy, and others seemingly out of place, like the beds, which are used as seats. Name	Alboroque:
	The stairway leads us to a warm atmosphere and a menu that has been completely renewed, with some interesting changes. Three examples: Tagliatelle alla Putanesca, Sea Bass with warm beetroot vinaigrette and Irish coffee ice cream. They also have monthly exhibitions. Approximate price: 20 €.

Les Corts

Name	El Negro:
	The gastronomic ideology, which lies between Oriental and Mediterranean, and the tasteful setting, are the trademarks of this restaurant. The carefully considered ambiance and the futuristic decoration combine well with the light, cosmopolitan dishes, such as the Calamari Risotto, and the tempting desserts. Nice selection of music during dinner or for having a drink. The lunch menu (Menu Mediodía) cost 17 €.
